Linear Algebra has loads of applications in the computer graphics and gaming industry. Two former C.U. students Amanda Tarr and Kai Tagawa will explain why Linear Algebra leads to fame, fortune and the Big Bucks.
The presentation will include video clips from actual computer games, general discussion of life at VR-!, and why studying Matrix Methods is a good thing for potential professionals in the computer gaming industry.
VR-1 is a Boulder-based company dedicated to building internet based computer games and supporting technology for the commercial market.
This presentation is sponsored by SIAM and the students of APPM 3310.

1997 Mathematical Modeling Contest
This past February, 5 students (with support from the undergraduate SIAM
chapter) participated in the 4-day Mathematical Modeling contest sponsored
by COMAP. The contest drew 409 entries in all, 271 from the US, 107 from
P.R. China, and 31 from other countries. The work of both our teams
Danielle Bundy, Christopher J. Hall
Adam Bechtel, Eric Phipps, Jeremy Zucker
were judged Meritorious, excellent in view of the distribution of designations:
Outstanding 9
Meritorious 62
Honorable Mention 101
Successful Participant 237
Please join Bengt Fornberg and myself in congratulating these students on
their work! For those of you interested in reading their papers, I've put
a copy in the applied math coffee room. Also, on Tuesday April 29 at 5:30,
in the Applied Math Undergraduate Seminar, each team will present a short
talk on their solution and on their participation in the contest.
Again our congratulations!
Check back soon for the problems and our team's solutions.
SIAM Information
The CU Boulder undergraduate chapter of SIAM, one of the newest engineering societies at CU, was founded to promote interactions between Applied Math students and faculty. In addition to applied math undergraduates and some graduate students, SIAM has also attracted students from other engineering disciplines to its activities. Society functions include technical presentations by students, faculty, and industry speakers, field trips and student/faculty social events---all designed to introduce undergraduates to the widespread use of applied mathematics in engineering and the sciences. All interested students, from any major, are encouraged to participate in SIAM-sponsored events. For more information, call (2-6927) or stop by the office (ECCR 238), or email siam@newton.
Some of our activities include meetings, mentor lunches, and field trips. Meetings consist of guest speakers, student and industry panels, and other varying fields of interest. Mentor lunches allow undergraduate students to meet a member of the faculty and upperclassmen. All SIAM functions are paid for by the organization, which is all the more reason to get involved!
