Statistics, Economics and Finance in one Profession! - 5-6:15pm ECOT 226 October 25, 2005
A talk given by Rob Ridge and Ryan Cox from Mercer HR in Denver on the actuarial profession. It addresses why this is one of the top-rated professions, what work is involved and how to get started in this line of work. The absract for the talk is given below: As professionals in the field of pension consulting, actuaries apply statistical, economic, and financial models to populations to determine the total liability associated with a given pension plan. As consultants, our clients rely on us to be aware of how current and future market conditions, demographic trends, and legislation will impact their financial statements through costs associated with their benefits packages. We will discuss what our role is in generating these costs, along with other aspects of our job. We will also discuss the actuarial exam process, tips on entering the profession, and other resources available for future actuaries.

Join CU Top Scholarship Advisor Lori Goodman to learn about exciting scholarship opportunities for students studying mathematics and engineering. A wide variety of scholarships will be discussed, and this is a great opportunity to have your questions answered by an expert. All students are encouraged to attend! Snacks will be provided.
Advising Luncheon - November 3, 2005 11:30-1pm ECOT 226
Department advisors and other students will be meeting for a free lunch to discuss courses and instructors. This is a great opportunity to learn about courses in an informal setting. Lunch will be provided.
Industry Talk - November, 2005
An evening talk will be given by an applied mathematician working in industry. This allows students to get a feel for what can be done in the working world with mathematics.
Summer Opportunities Luncheon - January, 2006
A lunch meeting held with faculty to bring summer opportunities to the attention of undergraduates.
Mathematical Contest in Modeling - February 22 - March 6, 2006
Each year, teams of there undergraduate students compete in a four day, international, math competition, modeling real world problems.
Advising Luncheon - March, 2006
A lunch meeting held with the undergraduate advisors. This provides students with the opportunity to get advice on courses from both faculty advisors and fellow students.
Student Mini-Conference - March 11, 2006
An all day event where students from different universities in the Colorado area give presentations on their research.
Modeling Contest Presentations and SIAM Officer Elections - April 27, 2006 5-6:30pm ECCR 1B51
Each team that participated in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling will give a short presentation on their solution. Topics include: optimizing irrigation patterns, routing wheelchair service in airports and analyzing the fight against HIV/AIDS. Officer elections for the local undergraduate SIAM chapter will be held after the presentations.

The CU Boulder undergraduate chapter of SIAM, one of the newest engineering societies at CU, was founded to promote interactions between Applied Math students and faculty. In addition to applied math undergraduates and some graduate students, SIAM has also attracted students from other engineering disciplines to its activities. Society functions include technical presentations by students, faculty, and industry speakers, field trips and student/faculty social events---all designed to introduce undergraduates to the widespread use of applied mathematics in engineering and the sciences. All interested students, from any major, are encouraged to participate in SIAM-sponsored events.

Some of our activities include meetings, mentor lunches, and field trips. Meetings consist of guest speakers, student and industry panels, and other varying fields of interest. Mentor lunches allow undergraduate students to meet a member of the faculty and upperclassmen. All SIAM functions are paid for by the organization, which is all the more reason to get involved!
