If you are logging on from home or elsewhere in the world (using ssh, of course!), it is OK to log on to newton and do lightweight work like email and text editing.

However, if you plan to run CPU-intensive programs, use a different workstation. On newton you can type the command ``rlab'' to get a listing of workstations and their current workloads. Pick the workstation which seems least loaded and log on to it instead (after exiting newton).

This way you are courteous to other users and your own program will run faster! Remember to ``nice'' your program. For running large Mathematica or Matlab jobs in the background, you can use the command mathbg or matlabbg.
