April 22nd, 2004 5-6pmPreliminary results from the Mathematical Contest in Modeling , (5-9 February) are in, and our four teams did a fantastic job! There will be four presentations by the teams that participated.
April 1st, 2004
Another successful undergraduate advising luncheon!March 11th, 2004
Alejandro Cantarero will be giving a student seminar entitled:
"Image Processing Using Linear Algebra and Wavelets"
This talk will provide a general overview of image processing techniques that can be performed with some basic knowledge of linear algebra, Fourier transforms, and wavelets. We will provide a brief discussion of the mathematical theory for image acquisition, filtering, wavelets, and image compression. Examples covering the rank of images using SVD, finding edges and smoothing images in spatial, Fourier, and wavelet domains, and compression techniques using the Fourier and wavelet transforms will be covered. A brief discussion of the old and new JPEG image compression standards will also be discussed to illustrate how these techniques are used in practice.February 23rd, 2004
David Sterling from SomaLogic will be giving a talk at 5pm in the Eaton Conference room in the Aerospace wing of the Engineering Center. His talk will cover a general outline of the work done at SomaLogic in proteomics. He will also discuss specific applied math problems in a simple ODE model for protein/aptamer binding and problems in statistical pattern classification.December 10th, 2003
Undergraduate VIGRE talks were given by Lauren Anderson and Ashely Moore, Pascal Getreuer, and Ian Derrington and Mark Winter.
October 30th, 2003
Another successful undergraduate advising luncheon!September 27th, 2003 (12-1:30)
L. G. de Pillis, who heads the modeling effort at Harvey Mudd, hosted an undergrad luncheon in the Applied Math conference room. Harvey Mudd is consistently among the schools with outstanding teams and Dr. Pillis may have some insight into strategies for the contest. Also, Dr. Pillis gave the Department Colloqium on Friday
September 18th, 2003 (4pm)
Graham DeJong of the US Census Bureau gave a talk focusing on current projects at the Census Bureau, the variety of work they conduct on a day-to-day basis and the application process.
September 4th, 2003 (5:30-7:30)
SIAM hosted its annual back to school get together. There was food and fun and a few new faces.
SIAM Information
The CU Boulder undergraduate chapter of SIAM, one of the newest engineering societies at CU, was founded to promote interactions between Applied Math students and faculty. In addition to applied math undergraduates and some graduate students, SIAM has also attracted students from other engineering disciplines to its activities. Society functions include technical presentations by students, faculty, and industry speakers, field trips and student/faculty social events---all designed to introduce undergraduates to the widespread use of applied mathematics in engineering and the sciences. All interested students, from any major, are encouraged to participate in SIAM-sponsored events.
For more information, call (2-6927) or stop by the Applied Math office (ECOT 225), or email siam@colorado.edu
Some of our activities include meetings, mentor lunches, and field trips. Meetings consist of guest speakers, student and industry panels, and other varying fields of interest. Mentor lunches allow undergraduate students to meet a member of the faculty and upperclassmen. All SIAM functions are paid for by the organization, which is all the more reason to get involved!
