Letter to Prospective International Applicant
Dear Prospective Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in the graduate program in Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado. Please read the following information before submitting your application.
FINANCIAL AID
If you wish to be considered for financial aid in the form of a fellowship or a teaching assistantship during the academic year, please print “FINANCIAL AID” at the top of your personal statement. If you are not seeking any financial assistance from the department, print “NONE” at the top of your personal statement.
While most of our incoming graduate students receive financial aid in the form of teaching assistantships, funding is not guaranteed. It is rare for an incoming graduate student to receive a research assistantship. Generally, Ph.D. students are offered research assistantships only after completing the preliminary examination requirement.
APPLICATION MATERIALS REQUIRED:
- Online application, including a personal statement (CV optional)
- A non-refundable $70 application fee
- Financial statement
- Four (4) letters of recommendation
- Two (2) official copies of academic transcripts from all colleges attended
- Scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Only general scores are required.
- TOEFL scores, unless you have completed at least one year of full-time academic study in the United States or English is the primary language in your native country
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Your personal statement should be in essay form and should provide relevant educational and work history and background information, such as how you became interested in the field of applied mathematics and how your experience has prepared you for graduate study, as well as how your educational and professional goals integrate with the graduate program and research directions of the Department of Applied Mathematics.
The personal statement should be uploaded with the online application. While a resume may be included, it does not suffice as a personal statement.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Note: It is not necessary to submit the Financial Statement prior to the application deadline.
The Financial Statement for International Applicants is not part of the online application but instead is a separate document submitted directly to the Office of Admissions. The form can be uploaded on the online application, mailed, or sent by e-mail to intladm@colorado.edu.
This form is not required for applicants who receive full financial support from the department. It is required only when an applicant is accepted without financial support or partial financial support.
If you are academically eligible for admission and require a Form I-20 (for an F-1 visa) or a Form DS-2019 (for a J-1 visa), you must submit the financial statement with required documentation certifying that you have adequate financial support to complete your program of study. Your admission cannot be finalized, and immigration forms cannot be sent to you, until you complete this step.
For further information on the Financial Statement and to access this form, please visit: http://www.colorado.edu/admissions/graduate/international/howtoapply/reqdocuments
RECOMMENDATION LETTERS
Four letters of recommendation are required. Once you have submitted your application, your recommenders will be asked to submit their letters online. Alternatively, letters of recommendation may be mailed directly to our department. We suggest that you sign the waiver statement on the Request for Recommendation form.
TRANSCRIPTS
Please have one official transcript from each college and university attended sent to both the Office of Admissions and the Department of Applied Mathematics.
Graduate Admissions scans all transcripts into an electronic application file and destroys the original paper copies. Since Graduate Admissions cannot forward original transcripts to academic departments, official transcripts also must be submitted directly to the department.

DEADLINE:
The deadline for receiving applications for fall 2013 admission is December 1, 2012.
Competition for admission to the Department of Applied Mathematics graduate program is quite keen. Thus, it is highly recommended that you ensure submission of all application materials by the posted deadline.
