Title:
Customized Web Homework: How Why? To What Effect?
Abstract
In an NSF-funded project, my colleagues and I created and used our own multi-version web homework sets in several courses over five years, independent of commercial publishers, independent of texts, using a free system at the University of Kentucky. We found that it enhances communication between students and faculty and benefits student mathematical performance. The presentation will include the values and the challenges of using completely customizable, on-line homework in a system that is free, and in which the faculty create every problem and have total control over what problems the students see. Specific examples from several courses will demonstrate the possibilities and the difficulties. The high correlations between students doing well on the homework and doing well in a variety of courses recommend this approach.
