Extended HTML characters

Characters can be denoted in different ways in HTML. For characters other than basic English/ASCII letters and digits, you may use either the HTML form ``&#nnn;'' (where nnn represents some decimal number), or an HTML macro of the form ``&word;'' as shown in the tables below. For example, here are how some characters can be displayed on a web page:
character: appearance: HTML codes: example: example source:
e acute é é   or   é Painlevé Painlevé
fraction 1/4 ¼ ¼   or   ¼ 3¼ oz. 3¼ oz.
greek pi π π   or   π πr² πr²
right arrow ⇒   or   ⇒ p ∧ q ⇒ r p ∧ q ⇒ r
less than or equal ≤   or   ≤ ♣ × ♥ ≤ Δ ♣ × ♥ ≤ Δ

Below are two tables showing many of the characters currently supported by most HTML browsers. The exact appearance of the characters will depend on which default font you have chosen for your browser, and possibly on the kind of browser (Firefox vs. Safari vs. Explorer vs. Netscape) and your operating system (Mac, Linux, Windows).
