Sun workstation scratch directories

Each Sun workstation has its own /scratch directory, usually 5 or more
gigabytes in size, and this is where you should generate any huge
data files, such as graphics/animations files, if on a Sun.
(NOTE: The Linux/Dell workstations have much larger available disk space.) Also, any huge data sets which are already backed up somewhere
(or don't need to be backed up) can reside here.
Note: files in the scratch directories may be
deleted automatically after 3 months; be sure to
touch any files you need for another three months...

touch

The command touch changes the timestamp for a file; e.g.,
unix>   touch oldfile.dat
will change the timestamp for file oldfile.dat, as shown by the command ls -l oldfile.dat. This makes the file ``new'' for purposes of scratch directory maintenance -- no file younger than 3 months old will be deleted except by consultation with the file's owner.

Read the file /scratch/SCRATCH_POLICY on any of these hosts,
and read web page ``Limits on Disk Usage
for more information.
