StarOffice 5.2

Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation editor
on the Suns!!!!

  1. What is StarOffice?
  2. How do I use StarOffice?

What is StarOffice?

The computers in the Newton Lab do NOT have Microsoft software. (The exceptions are the PC and the Macintosh computer in the corner.)

But no problem; the software package "StarOffice" runs on the Sun workstations -- clients of babbage, littlewood and sobolev -- serving as the non-Microsoft equivalent of Office98.

StarOffice allows you to view or create word-processing documents, in either StarOffice or Word format. In addition, StarOffice has the equivalents of Excel, PowerPoint, as well as drawing and web page editing capabilities.

Documents you create can be saved in StarOffice format, or in Microsoft Word format, or plain text, or HTML. Thus it is unnecessary to transfer documents to/from PCs or Macs with Microsoft Office98.

The new version of StarOffice is 5.2. If you have previously used version 5.1, you must run the command soffice.setup before using the new version. (The command "soffice51" will run the old version.)

Before using: Set Up

Before your first use of StarOffice version 5.2, run the command ``soffice.setup''. (Afterwards you will just use the command soffice.setup.) For new users the steps will look like the following. (For those who have used version 5.1, the steps will be different, but the previous setup will be used to make your upgrade fairly intuitive.)
Click on ``Next''.
Click on ``Next''.
Click on ``Accept''.
It may be useful to give your real Name & Email address, in case you ever want those inserted automatically in documents you create. You can leave the other fields blank, however. When you've entered any data you feel like giving, click on ``Next''.
The top choice, ``Standard Workstation Installation'', is the correct one. Click on ``Next''.
It's a good idea to let StarOffice create subdirectory ``office52'' in your home directory, which is the default choice. Click on ``Next''.
Yes, let it create the office52 folder in your home directory.
NOTE: When you try to save new documents, it is this folder (subdirectory) where they are saved unless you specify otherwise.
Click on ``Complete''.
Click on ``OK'' -- use the latest Java version already installed on the system.
Click on ``OK'' -- forget about Adabas for now.

Using StarOffice

After you have run soffice.setup, you are ready to use the software. The command to use is soffice.

If you want to view an existing file, whether it is a plain text file or a document produced by StarOffice or Microsoft Word or Excel or PowerPoint, you can give the filename as part of the command, e.g.,

simpson> soffice MYREPORT.DOC
simpson> soffice mydoc.sdw
simpson> soffice mysprsheet.sdc
