Ty Manteuffel-Greatest American Hero

This application utilizes a simple, PowerPoint-like format in order to display various information in a series. The overall goal of this application is to give the user a humorous, step-by-step tutorial. By combining simple text and animated pictures, the user not only reads each instruction, but is also able to see a moving example of each step. This simple format is very intuitive and requires no additional clarification for the user to operate. The theme for this application draws heavily from the Greatest American Hero television show that aired in the early 1980s. In the show, Ralph, the hero and protagonist, is very capable of flying, however he always has trouble landing. In paying homage to Ralph’s lack of landing abilities, I purposefully neglected to include a step in the tutorial covering landing techniques.
The overall balance of text to art in the tutorial is weighed heavily in favor of the art. I chose to use colors that are all very bright and saturated. This gives the application a light-hearted feel and allows for a more visual learning experience. I chose to animate each symbol in a unique way, consistently adding a more visually dynamic and intriguing quality. The user, therefore, is immersed in a more interactive space.
The programming in this application draws heavily on a combination of the ShowMe application and the BoneTool application. The base GUI of the application is created directly from the ShowMe application, which enhances the step-by-step feel of the tutorial. The animated examples utilize the BoneTool application in order to give the figure a more fluid and anatomically correct quality of movement. The text fields benefit from a message array, similar to the text fields used in the BoneTool application. New information is displayed while the animation progresses, giving the application a temporal characteristic.
