Will Geller - The Three Rs of Conservation

Application
Commentary
The Three R’s of Conservation is an application I developed for an environmental message contest. The idea is to create a message that is related to conservation, recycling, environmentalism etc. I decided I would create a Flash application that informs readers what they can do to reduce consumption and generation of trash. The average American generates 5 pounds of trash a day! We need to greatly reduce the amount of waste we produce if we wish to continue living on an unpolluted planet.

I used Flash to create a PowerPoint style application that displays text messages on top of bitmap images. I spent a lot of time getting the application to look good with the size of the pictures and the contrast of the text. I created a movie clip symbol for each image holding text and background image. I created a slide movie clip symbol for each slide, which contain an instances of the image symbols. The slide symbols each contain a tween that increases size and reduces opacity to transparent, fading into the next slide. Each slide symbol is layered with the same position and size, from the first slide to last.

I utilize simple code that plays the animation for the fade with a mouse click event. An if loop allows only one click per slide so the fade tween happens once for each slide. The first slide has a mouse over event handler that triggers a function that plays music.

The music and photos are not mine. (except for the photos I took on campus) I cite the source for the pictures and song in the last slide.
