There will be three projects assigned during the semester. The goal of the projects is to combine multiple concepts and solve difficult problems. The projects will give you some experience in the practice of modeling and solving problems related to Calculus III concepts using computer software. The projects also give you several chances to show off your verbal prowess. The overall quality of the lab reports will be taken seriously. They will be graded for presentation, spelling, grammar, clarity, and insight, as well as mathematical correctness.
For each project, students will have the option of submitting either individual or group reports. Only one report per group is necessary and all members of the group will receive an identical grade. The names, ID numbers and correct recitation section numbers for each group member must be included in the report. In addition, the CULearn group number (see below) must also be included. If any of this information is missing, your grade may not be recorded! The regrade policy is the same as for exams, except that lab questions should be directed to the lab course coordinator(s).
Hard copies of the labs are to be turned in at the start of lecture on the date they are due. Late labs will not be accepted or graded and a score of zero will be given to any late lab. Electronic copies of the labs must also be submitted via the CULearn system, as described below.
During the week prior to a lab due date, the TAs will hold their office hours in the APPM Undergraduate Lab (ECCR 143), and if possible, the TAs will hold their normal office hours. (Be sure to check the course web page for the most recent details on office hours.)
Several ITS labs are also available for your use - ECCR 244 in particular. You are free to use whatever computer system you feel most comfortable with, although it may be beneficial to use Mathematica since the TAs will probably be expecting Mathematica code during their office hours.
In addition, students can now download a copy of Mathematica for their use by going to this webpage and following the directions.
You must register yourself with a group using CULearn for each project. Groups can be of size three or smaller and members can be from different recitations and lectures. Even if you are working on the projects by yourself, you must register yourself in a group. The procedure is:
Everybody in the course must register for a group before we can release the link allowing you to submit your projects to CULearn. Hence, the link for submitting your project will not appear until at least Friday, October 30.
It is expected that group members will form good collaborative working relations. Group disputes of any kind will result in that group being disbanded without any mediation. In this instance, the group members must submit individual projects.
Only one person from each group needs to submit an electronic copy
of the lab. The due date for the electronic submission of the
second lab is November 6, 2009.
If you have multiple documents to submit, please
"zip" them into a single file and upload the zip-file.
The procedure to upload a file is:
One hard copy per group must be submitted at the start of class on the due date.
