There will be three experimental projects during the semester. The goal of the projects is to combine multiple concepts and solve difficult problems. The projects will give you some experience in the practice of modeling and solving differential equations using the computer, and showing off your verbal prowess in the reports. The quality of the lab reports will be taken seriously. They will be graded for presentation, spelling, grammar, clarity, as well as for mathematical correctness. Labs are to be turned in at lecture on the date they are due. Late labs will not be accepted. A score of zero is given to any late lab.
TAs will hold regular office hours in the Applied Math Undergraduate Lab (ECCR 143) during lab weeks; if there is no lab in progress, office hours are in the TA’s offices as usual. Occasionally your recitation section may also meet in the lab. Other ITS labs are available for your use - ECCR 244 (Mac Lab) in particular. You are free to use whatever computer system you feel most comfortable with, though it may be beneficial to have the Matlab software package available. The lab assignments will be distributed on this web page.
For each project students will have the option of submitting either individual or group reports. Only one report per group is necessary and all members of the group will receive an identical grade. The names, ID numbers and correct recitation section numbers for each group member must be included in the report. If any of this information is missing, your grade will not be able to be recorded! The regrading policy is the same as for exams, except that lab questions should be directed to Joshua Snyder and Dane Taylor (lab course coordinators).
It is expected that group members will form good collaborative working relations. Group disputes of any kind will result in that group being disbanded without any mediation. In this instance, the group members must submit individual projects.
One hard copy per group must be submitted at the start of one given recitation amongst the group members.
