    Course description

Mathematical techniques are often presented in an already polished form, and the applications that motivated the development of these techniques are not an integral part of the presentation. The objective of this course is to study various mathematical techniques in the context of concrete applications, starting from a non-mathematical description of the problem, the formulation of an appropriate mathematical model, mathematical analysis of the model, and numerical studies. The applications that will be studied are: shock waves and jam formation in traffic modeling, synchronization of coupled oscillators, face recognition using eigenfaces, and neural networks. This list may be modified depending on the interests of the class.
