Course Information:

Description: This is the first part of a two-semester course. The course covers a variety of topics from real and functiinal analysis, including metric and normed spaces, the Arzelà-Ascoli theorem, fixed point theorems to solve boundary and initial value problems in o.d.e.'s, and Banach and Hilbert spaces, among many other topics.
Prerequisite: MATH 4310 and 4320, or equivalent; MATH 3130 or equivalent; or instructor consent.
Textbook: Applied Analysis by J. K. Hunter & B. Nachtergaele.
Other recommended materials: (1) Introductory Real Analysis by Kolmogorov & Fomin; (2) Principles of Mathematical Analysis by W. Rudin

Blue books: Each student is responsible to bring an unused blue book at the beginning of each exam. Please do not write anything (including any personal information) in the bluebooks you bring because they will be randomly assigned right before each exam.

Homework/Quizzes/Exams: Weekly homework problems will be assigned during the semester. Although homework will not be collected nor graded, a constant practice is key for a deep understanding of the material. Five random quizzes (20 points each) will be given during the semester. Quizzes will include any classroom or reading material as well as homework assigned since the most recent examination. Three exams (100 points each) will be given during the semester on the dates/times described in the course schedule.
Lecture interruptions: Laptops, cellphones and any communication devices should be turned off and put away during lecture.

Illness: If you become sick right before an examination or, during an extensive period prior to an examination, please bring a note from your doctor verifying your illness. Your doctor's note should clearly specify the start and ending date where you were unable to comply with your school obligations.
Final grade policy: Approximate grade lines will be based on the following curve-letter-grade system:
   A if (overall percentage) ≥ 90% AND (total quiz grades) ≥ 50 points,
   B if (overall percentage) ≥ 80% AND (total quiz grades) ≥ 50 points,
   C if (overall percentage) ≥ 70% AND (total quiz grades) ≥ 50 points,
   D if (overall percentage) ≥ 60% AND (total quiz grades) ≥ 50 points,
   F if (overall percentage) ≤ 50% OR (total quiz grades) ≤ 45 points.
Any adjustments (including + and - grades) to the above scale will be in the students' favor.
