Variational methods for the 3-body problem

Panos Panayotaros

We describe some new constructions of periodic orbits in systems of particles interacting through gravitation. In these orbits, a number of particles (N=3, 4, ...) move along closed planar curves with intricate, often very symmetric shapes, avoiding collisions. We explain some of the underlying theory, based on the existence of critical points of the action. A main difficulty is to show that the critical points represent collisionless trajectories.
