Fluid Mixing via Chaotic Advection in 3D

Paul Mullowney, Applied Math, CU Boulder

Title: In this talk, fluid mixing via chaotic advection will be discussed. First, a 2D system will be derived, and explored numerically and analytically. This system provides the motivation for the 3D system to follow. The 3D map will be constructed from closed streamline motion of the particles. Then, I'll explore this map numerically and analytically. I'll attempt to construct the normal form of the map in order to understand the orbits of the map. Finally, I'll finish by discussing some of the more interesting properties of the velocity field from which this map was derived.
