A few flows with coherent structures: How to visualize, model,
simulate, and characterize them?

This informal talk covers some of the fluid dynamics research in my group
dominated by organized vortices. Vortices are coherent structures effective in
transferring momentum, energy, and circulation over relatively long distances.
That is a compelling justification for the application of vortex generators in
flow control. In this talk I will present experimental, modeling and simulation
results for the following projects:
- An electrostatically activated resonant plate micro-mixer
- A vortexactuator for low speed maneuvering of underwater vehicles
- Separation bubble control for maneuvering of flexible-wing micro aerial vehicles
- Micro droplet manipulation for Lab-on-a-chip devices
These applications are ripe for fundamental analysis through mathematical and
dynamical system techniques. I will also show some preliminary results on the
Lagrangian Coherent Structures in our research.
