All of amath's web pages correspond to files in the /www/ directory.   Here are some examples:

Amath is a workstation separate from the other APPM workstations; you can't get to web pages via some special directory on newton, so you must ssh to amath (same password as on newton). You do have a home directory on amath, but it doesn't have the files that reside in your newton home directory. Your home directory on amath will basically be a scratch directory (preferably empty), intended only for work associated with web pages. When you log on to amath (using ssh, of course), you should read the file README.
All course web pages are in /www/courses/ in subdirectories named by semester. Only the current semester's home page is linked to the main "index.html" file.
In a course's main web directory, the file ``index.php'' is a PHP program which dynamically redirects the user to the home page for the current semester -- if there is one.If not, it generates a list of previous semesters' home pages for the course, to make them easy to navigate.
In preparing web pages for a future semester, know that the index.php file will not redirect viewers to that semester's home page automatically until that semester actually begins.
In addition to serving web pages, amath will have software which is helpful in preparing web pages, including editors and graphics software. Amath will have the basic text editors, the ImageMagick and NetPBM commands (esp. convert and mogrify), xfig, xv, xpaint, IDL, and Perl.Amath may not have Fortran or C compilers, Mathematica or Matlab, or email. Notify webmaster@amath if you think that some important (for web purposes) software has been excluded.
Because Unisys & IBM are claiming patent rights for the mathematical algorithm LZW -- on which GIF files depend -- several software packages (including Matlab and IDL) do not support the GIF format. Instead, all new software (except Maple) supports the superior, and public domain, image format called ``PNG'' (Portable Network Graphics). You are encouraged to stop using GIF and start using PNG. The new departmental home pages will not use any GIF images, with the possible exception of existing animated GIFs.You can use ``convert'' to convert GIF or TIFF images to PNG format and/or resize pictures, e.g.,
amath> convert picture.gif picture.png amath> convert picture2.tiff picture2.png amath> convert -geometry 33% bigphoto.jpg small.jpg
