Finite difference- and finite element methods have long histories as flexible and powerful numerical techniques to solve partial differential equations. In the last two decades, pseudospectral methods have emerged as intriguing alternatives in many applications - and as superior ones in some.

This book surveys high order finite difference- and pseudospectral methods, noting the close connections between these. The focus is on explaning how, when, and why these methods work, and how to most easily implement them. Heuristic explanations and illustrations are emphasized over more theoretical viewpoints.

The Appendices (which also include key code segments) provide background material on several areas of numerical methods.
