Convective Fluid Simulations

of the

Reduced Nonhydrostatic Quasigeostrophic Equations

Keith Julien, Edgar Knobloch, Ralph Milliff , Michael Sprague, and Joe Werne

These animations of convective plumes were created using a 3D fluid simulation with stratification, rotation, and heating.

See Sprague et al 2006 for more details.

These simulations may be compared to DNS studies of the full incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

Animation #4: .mov, uses Rayleigh Number=2.81e7, Taylor Number=5.0e7, Prandtl number=1, convective Rossby number =0.75(temperature anomalies)

See Julien et al 1996 for more details.
