Avery has done research under my supervision in Fall 2010. He was a top student in my Calculus class, as well. His tuition was covered by the REU-VIGRE undergraduate fellowship. In the first semester, we focused on building his understanding in certain preliminary topics geared towards our research in Math-Biology: basic thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, differential equation and bifurcation theory. This was achieved through weekly meetings and seminar presentations. In the second semester, he focused on learning some mathematical softwares: Matlab, Maple, Latex and Mathematica, to increase his computational efficiency. Following my advice, he decided to supplement his knowledge by taking relevant non-Math credit courses. He is currently doing his summer internship in the MIT Biomechanics lab.
Evan Young is an advanced undergraduate student with a series of Math courses under his belt: Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calculus sequences, as well as foundation courses in Biology and Chemistry. He was also supported by the REU research foundation fellowship to do research with me in the Fall-2011 semester.
